Pain Relief / Pain Management: Prolotherapy and RIT

Prolotherapy | Enhanced Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy, also known as Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) is an effective treatment for painful or lax ligaments, tendons, and joints.

If you suffer from musculoskeletal pain — such as chronic joint pain in the knee or shoulder, or back and neck pain — it may be the result of loose or painful ligaments. Joint stress, and to some extent aging, cause the water content in our joints and connective tissue to decrease. The cartilage gets brittle and shrinks causing joints to loosen.

If an injury such as a sprain occurs, ligaments can become lax and do not always heal completely. This can cause pain and stress in nearby or even remote structures that have to take over some of the work. The ligaments themselves can be painful because of scarring.

If you're seeking a pain management physician in the Sacramento or greater San Francisco Bay Area, consider working with Dr. Richard Gracer. He's well-known pain specialist and highly experienced in prolotherapy. Contact him today and you could soon be feeling better than you have in a long time.

The working of a door with loose hinges provides a good analogy to how loose joints work. When a door hinge is loose, we may see that the opposite edge hits the door frame, making the door hard to close and causing damage to the door itself. We can temporarily fix this by lifting the door back into place, like treating a spinal joint dysfunction with manipulation. But the next time the door opens, the same problem occurs.

We could also apply oil to the hinge or the frame to allow the door to close more easily, like using a steroid injection. However, this is also only temporary.

What we need to do is fix the hinge and that's what prolotherapy does!

Prolotherapy works by tightening loose ligaments, reducing scar tissue, increasing blood flow, and by eleminating the small pain fibers that grow in damaged structures. As the ligaments return toward normal function, joint pain is reduced or eliminated.

What is prolotherapy? It is a safe and effective procedure where a mildly irritating solution is injected on the junction of the ligament or tendon at the bone. This causes a mild inflammatory response, stimulating the body's own healing system.

The results - a thicker, tighter, stronger, and less sensitive ligament. This increase in strength allows normal joint function and decreases stress on other structures.

Key Benefits of Prolotherapy or Regenerative Injection Therapy

  • Stimulates the body's own healing system
  • Safe and effective, non-surgical procedure
  • Reduces or eliminates chronic pain

When the ligaments and joints or the surrounding muscle tissues are damaged or scarred, additional therapy can be required to allow complete healing. Complementing prolotherapy with Ozone Therapy can help heal arthritis, degenerative joint disease, ligament injuries, neck, and spinal disc problems.
